Hanamaruken Ramen, Manila

I have a confession: up to a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t like ramen. Every time I’d give it another chance and concede to a ramen dinner with my ramen-crazed friends, I almost always immediately regret it. I found it too salty (it made me bloated and gave me headaches) and too filling (bad carbs: the bane of my existence). I even tried “the best tantanmen in town” three times and I still prefered my good ol’ Maggi curry noodles (from SG) over it. Cue audible gasps from ramen lovers.

So when we decided to eat with some friends at Hanamaruken Ramen at The Grove by Rockwell, I was skeptical, to say the least. We ordered two kinds of ramen and 3 side dishes. Everything looked normal enough when they were served. However, upon my first sip of the intensely umami, pork-y broth, I was hooked. I was surprised at how rich and flavorful it was and I could’t stop eating it until the last drop. I’ve since been bugging Emman to go back and try the Happiness Bowl. So! I think it’s fair to say that I’m officially a ramen convert because of this bowl right here:

Pot Belly Ramen (Tonkotsu / Shoyu / Roasted Pork Belly)
Spicy Tobanjan Ramen (Tonkotsu / Spicy Tobanjan Paste). This had the same umami flavor, but with a kick of spice! So yum!
Ebi Tempura
Karaage
Edemame (or what was left of it. hee.)
“Everyday at 6pm, Osaka locals queue religiously at the 40 branches of Hanamaruken. On good days, lines can go on until midnight. The secret? A Shoyu Tonkotsu ramen topped with a dark, tender and slow-braised pork rib.”

Love their interiors. Tortured that I didn’t bring my other lens with me for wider angle shots.
